Underneath the bridge
The tarp has sprung a leak
And the animals I've trapped
Have all become my pets
And I'm living off of grass
And the drippings from the ceiling
It's okay to eat fish
'Cause they don't have any feelings
(Kurt D. Cobain, Something in the Way, 1991)

The night the videogame arcade burned down, all of us neighborhood kids found ourselves changed. A hidden, emotionally terrifying level had been collectively unlocked. Not only had I lost my primary reason for existing, I had also lost my companions. Days after the fire I crept into the blackened arcade. None of the machines had made it, yet it was pretty cool to see them in a plasticky dissolved mess.
I started looking for new friendships in chat rooms. It was fun to be in there for a while but finding the right group was tricky. I have always been too cool for nerds and too weird for the really cool kids, so my options were pretty limited.
One day after school I noticed three kids. One of the girls was wearing a Siamese Dream t-shirt. They must have been there forever and they looked kinda lost. The four of us started hanging out in the woods, just behind Sappy Estate where everything tasted funny and the fields felt like labyrinths. We ate corn and drank blood, and it was magick for a while.
Yet, it wasn’t long before feelings for my lost arcade friends resurfaced. They had never really disappeared but in the woods you learn to keep some feelings to yourself.
